The day I got kidnapped by my bicycle

The little bike had three wheels. It carried me three miles away from home. I was three years old, alone in a street I did not know.

My parents must have freaked out. There were no mobile phones. I was completely off the radar. All I remember is a blue sky, a field of grass, and a stranger approaching me. Everything could have gone wrong that day.

Maybe I followed others. Maybe I looked no further than the next bend in the road. Or maybe, this had nothing to do with me. With a hammer in your hand, every problem is a nail. With a bike at hand, the world grows a little bigger.

As crazy as it my sounds, I believe I discovered something fundamental that day.

Much like a summer holiday, or the internet, my bike unlocked new experiences and friendships. It brought early independence from parents, from the neighborhood and from cars. It put me at the steering wheel.

When a stranger phoned the number stitched into my jacket. I had no clue how lucky I was. I had a bike, a new friend and a bicycle-friendly city to explore. The time is now to make this a reality for everyone, everywhere. Will you pedal along?
