First Amendment in Social Media wont Protect You

The First Amendment protects people from government censorship in any public or private media or personal post. When it comes to what you can and cant say, censorship varies. Obscenity, harassment, and hate are all protected by government censorship, unless it involves threats or unlawful violence.

Its amazing how many people do not understand this point. The first amendment says that CONGRESS shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech. There’s no protection on a private corporation’s social media. Violate their TOS and you’re banned.

First amendment protections do not extend to Twitter users. Twitter, and any other social media platform, has every right to censor whatever they want. You agree to their terms to have an account. Don’t like it? Get a different account somewhere else with terms you do agree with.

My input: As the First amendment rights do not extend to twitter uses, this only applies to threats, hate, and obscenity to a powerful extent.

Noam Chomsky makes a strong statement by proving the point that if we think only people that we dont like should not have access to freedom of speech, then in reality, not one should have access to it since others have the power to say the same amount of information equally. I dont like getting into political talk, but since Donald Trump just runs his mouth on Twitter and many dont agree with it, then they should agree with any politicians that can say anything they desire.

The article above states what can and cannot be said on social media. It describes how harassment, hate, and obscenity all have its limits in what can be said/shown. Threats and unlawful online violence are the highest limits and can have disciplinary action. The first amendment only covers a limited ground of government censorship.

The two Youtube videos are basic examples of why social media and the first right amendment are clashing and many people are fighting about what can and cannot be said online.

In conclusion through further research and findings from different online sources I can conclude that not everyone approves of First amendment rights in social media and there are mixed understandings of what can and cannot be said. In Twitters policies it states that tweets can be removed if they are offensive to others and since users agree to it before they sign up, First amendment rights cannot be violated for that reason. There is a misunderstanding when it comes to violation of First amendment rights on social media platforms, but people have to remember that even though the First Amendment is free from government censorship, saying offensive and harsh things online can still create negative opinions about you.
