If the next steps in the Covid-19 crisis were a bus crash about to happen, could you convince the driver to stop?
However I’ve also been interested in a few rather surreal online exchanges around this since. Maybe you’ve had similar conversations back in February, or recently.
They sound rather like this …
Me to bus driver: We’re driving at 100mph straight towards the cliff edge. If we don’t pull up 50 people on the bus will die.
Bus driver: Don’t worry we have slowed to 70mph, so not as fast now.
Me: Ok, it will take us a little longer to get there, but we’ll still go over and kill everyone.
Bus driver: Well in fact a few people got off at the last stop, so we’re not quite full, perhaps only 40 passengers on board, and we’ve got airbags, so some people might survive.
Me: well yes, but if half of them die that’s not good.
Bus driver: Come on, it’s a sunny day, don’t be so pessimistic! Do you really believe all the passengers will die.?
Me: Well, of course there is a brick wall before the cliff edge, so maybe we’ll just have a nasty crash there instead, or at least it’ll mean we tumble over slowly and the lifeboat may be able to pick some of us up from the sea.
Bus driver: So what are you worrying about? Sit back down and shut up.
