The One Thing We Never Do

And the thing that could help us get more out of life.

The thing we never do and the most valuable piece of advice I’ve received is “Shut up.”

Now, I get it. I sound rude and sour. Just let me explain.

Silence is the MOST underrated thing in the world. Imagine being able to get away from your busy life, falling into a sweet haze. That’s basically silence (unless it’s awkward, that’s basically a ruckus).

Some peaceful silence to meditate, to do whatever you want is AMAZING.

Also, sometimes being silent a lot of the time says more than being loud a lot of the time. If you talk a lot, your thoughts tend to be more disregarded, as they seem less valuable.

Being silent also gives you more time to think. When you reflect a lot, you can put more thought into what you say, therefore making a better impression.

But don’t take my word for it, take Plato’s.

Damn. That’s so true. Speak only when you have something meaningful to say. However, it’s hard to distinguish between meaningful words and useless ones.

Plato felt that we as a human race talked too much. What differentiated fools from wise men was that wise men spoke when they had something to say, but fools used their words to simply blabber.

Don’t blabber.

Here’s how not to blabber and to economise your words.

First, let me give you some mindsets to get into and questions to ask so you’re thinking in that question.

Imagine this. You’re in a high-stakes meeting, and your boss mentions something that you come up with a joke about. Would this be an appropriate time to speak? Not really.

However, in the scenario where you have an insight that you think would work for the current situation and would make a difference in the end outcome, then yes. Speak.

Question #1: Does this add any value to the conversation?

Question #2: Will people leave knowing a new insight they didn’t know beforehand?

Don’t spend them carelessly or in unknown places.

Another case scenario: You’re on the phone with your friend and she JUST CAN’T WAIT to catch up. You start blabbering and talking fast, and zipping right over your words.

This is like accidentally dropping 10000 dollars on the street. Not necessarily what you want to do.

Don’t spend your words carelessly.

Question #3: Am I zipping over my words?

Question #4: Am I using my words carelessly?

This is my FAVORITE mindset. Do an exercise with me.

Sit up straight. Take a deep breath in and out. Two more. You are at peace. You are a strong resilient mountain. You are amazing.

Do you feel the need to talk as much? Not really, I hope. This is a peaceful yet resilient mindset, that, before you speak, you need to get into.

Question #5: Am I embodying a mountain?
