On guns

I grew up in a small town into a family that liked guns. I’m not too experienced, but I used to love going to the gun range with my grandpa, and shooting his .22 at beer cans, and I couldn’t wait for the day he would let me shoot his bigger guns. When I got older, I enjoyed playing first person shooter games that involved guns that I would never be allowed to shoot at a target range, but I thought it would sure be cool to try. I think all of these factors influenced how I felt about gun control growing up, which means I know how the gun culture influences America.

It’s been a few years since I shot a gun at a target range, and in those years countless mass shootings have occurred. These shootings, Sandy Hook in particular, forced me to reevaluate my stance on gun control. I figured that after the loss of so many lives, maybe we ought to be doing something differently.

You would think our elected officials would figure that too.

I could go into all of the arguments for and against gun control, but you know what? At this point I don’t know why anyone should have to fight for gun control. Why on earth, and after all these mass shootings, should we have to fight for legislation that makes it hard for people to buy killing machines?

It’s because America is obsessed with guns. I know it because I’ve gotten just a taste of it. We need to rethink this obsession, because it’s costing way too many innocent lives. Do I think it would be fun to shoot an assault rifle? Heck yeah. Do I need to shoot/own an assault rifle? HECK NO. Don’t tell me it’s for self-defense, don’t tell me you have second amendment rights. There is no good reason why any civilian needs a semi-automatic weapon (yeah hunters, fight me). It’s time for us to take a good look at our culture, and ask ourselves what’s important. I in no way am suggesting we ban guns- it’s called gun control, not gun abolition. I would even like to own one someday. But I want it to be hard. I want them to background check the hell out of me, and make sure I know how to use the damn thing, and not let me buy a freakin’ assault rifle. If you feel the same, tell your gun-loving friends and family, tell your representatives, tell everyone. Or read another headline about another mass shooting, because they will keep happening unless we do something.

Thanks for reading, friends.
