Love makes a family

It is not easy to deal with homosexual parenting. Many people refer to old psychological theories, born in an outdated socio-cultural context. It can be difficult for these people to get away from the idea of the family with a traditional division of roles. But it is undeniable that society has undergone profound changes, there are now many forms of family, within which the traditional division of roles has changed substantially.

Studies on homosexual parenting go in this direction. Thirty years of national and international research have shown that families with lesbian mothers and gay fathers are similar to those made up of heterosexual parents in terms of their functioning, perceived happiness, and the development of children raised in them. The data collected have shown that there are no significant differences in their growth, indeed they show a level of psychological wellbeing and of regulation of emotions similar to that of their peers raised by heterosexual parents, and the same applies to the capacity of socialization, emotional functioning, school progress, the construction of gender identity.

The studies do not stop only at the beginning of children’s lives, which were followed also during adolescence, when the sexual orientation and the personal identity of the children develop and stabilize. Even in this period, no significant differences emerge and there is no confusion of gender identity.

What differs from families with heterosexual parents is the discrimination and stigmatisation to which children and adolescents are often subjected. This cannot lead to the denial of their existence, on the contrary, it requires a necessary recognition by society of this kind of family, first of all through the attribution of the same rights and duties.
