Black Experience and White Fear

Black Americans do not get the respect they deserve in their own country. Being a Black American is far different from being any other type of American. Blacks people in America are not valued as a whole and for decades have been feared by other populations in the US, especially white people. As discussed in class and in the book “Eloquent Rage” the term for this fear was coined “white fear”. White fear is the generational fear that has carried over from the racist stereotypes that were established before and during slavery. This fear has had terribly negative effects and can be seen as a cause of systematic oppression, subtle and not so subtle racism, and racial profiling/targeting.

I can personally relate to white fear because there have been times when me and my friends have been victims of racial targeting. Being followed around stores and experiencing general distrust from fellow citizens are only a few of the many situations that Black Americans have to deal with on a day-to-day basis. Another thing from my life that relates to white fear and racial targeting is the way my parents taught me how to act if I ever get caught up with the police. For many Black kids, being taught how to deal with police and navigate white fear is just as common as “the sex talk” in other families. I believe that these situations and experiences are what differentiate growing up from growing up Black, in America. Hopefully one day this fear will cease to exist but until then Black Americans will be forced to deal with the same bullshit that they have dealt with for decades.
