Drawing the line between Us and those dirty rotten climate change deniers

Artist Fredrick Githire <fredrickgithire@gmail.com> Lilanga Style

I am a broad-minded sort of person. I smile when I see the crazy hair configurations of today’s youth especially as my own hair fades. My admiration of darker skin colour reflects my own struggle with a white, then red, then brown, then peeling, then white again attitude to sun exposure. While my music appreciation is firmly fixated on 80’s rock I try my best to understand the appeal of anything with a beat. I have never felt the need to indulge in drugs other than adrenaline and alcohol but really could not care less how people twist their neurons. Similarly, sexual orientation is surely a private matter but I do wish I had the dress sense and dance moves of my gay friends. Religious debates are a pet hobby and I am quite happy to go vegetarian, even vegan, when the opportunity arises.

But when a couple of rich kids behind me in a bus start mouthing off about the exotic world travel they have been on THIS year I realize I have become a climate changeist (a sort of climate change bigot). I do not care if they DO or DO NOT believe in global effects from human activity but I detest those individuals who collectively destroy the future of this planet out of selfish greed.

Right now, my ire is not quite the same level as I would direct toward Nazi sympathisers, pedophiles, Klu Kux Kan members or people who are cruel to animals but it is not far behind. I can feel the “dark” force inside me itching to express my frustration. My own self-reflection casts shadows and I certainly am no climate saint but I try my practical best.
