How Blockchain is Aiding Coronavirus Relief Efforts

We are more than three months into the worldwide health crisis of the coronavirus, COVID-19, and the situation continues to rapidly develop day by day. Throughout all of this, blockchain-based companies from around the world have quickly stepped up to the plate to leverage their technology for pandemic relief efforts.

From monitoring the spread of the illness in certain geographic areas to maintaining transparency over the medical supply chain and charitable donations, we’re seeing some creative and admirable ways that these companies are using technology for global good.

Reducing congestion in public spaces

The Toronto-based blockchain startup Emerge launched a public safety system project called Civitas. Its goal is to “cut store wait times by reducing gatherings in tight spaces, reducing the probability of contagion.” Essentially, it can help users determine the safest days and times to head to the grocery store or pharmacy, and in areas that are on full lockdown, help authorities determine whether individuals are permitted to leave their homes by matching their government IDs with blockchain records. Emerge has been focusing on the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where residents face heavy fines for not staying home.
